Teaching Reading ETP
Reading and writing are two feathers from the same bird. Both are a means to communication. Unlocking the ability to read allows the reader to receive information. In contrast, being able to skillfully write means you have the ability to express information. Hand in hand, they are a means to growth of a child, a community, a nation, and a world.
Reading is a process that beings with basic knowledge of how to digest a text. How do you hold a text? Which direction do I read? What is each black squiggle? What is phonics? Once I build a word, how can I make sense of it? What is the author's purpose? What can I do with this information I have just read? These questions are a progression of skills that reflects reading development.
Writing, in much the same way, has a progression of skills required to successfully express an idea. Writing is the process of constructing ideas purposefully. The steps of writing include, prewriting/ brainstorming, drafting, editing/ revising, and publishing. To an example of a writing lesson plan in which I led my third grade students through the writing process, click here or click the link in the READING PDF above. To see the products of writing samples that my fifth grade students produced, explore the rest of the St. Elmo Explorers' Class Blog.
